This long-legged and slender shorebird breeds in the tundra and migrates south mainly through the Central Flyway in the Prairies. Their wintering grounds are in South America. Males display in groups in leks where they compete for females’ attention. Buff-breasted Sandpipers like dry, short-grass habitats so watch for them on turf farms and the likes.
Similar species:
The slender body, large dark eye, buff colouring and sparse markings on the brest help separate this species from other shorebirds.
